Three Israelis shot dead at West Bank-Jordan crossing
Three Israeli men were shot and killed at a border point between Jordan and the occupied West Bank, according to Israeli authorities. The gunman, identified by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) as Jordanian national Maher Jazi, approached the Allenby Bridge crossing in a truck from the Jordanian side. Upon exiting the vehicle, he opened fire, prompting security personnel to respond by “eliminating” him. Israeli forces inspected the truck for explosives, while Jordan announced that it was launching an investigation into the incident.
The attack occurred in an area controlled by Israel, where Jordanian trucks unload goods for the West Bank. Following the shooting, Israel closed all land crossings with Jordan, including the Allenby Bridge, which serves as the only direct connection between Jordan and the West Bank. The victims were identified as guards Yohanan Shchori, 61, Yuri Birnbaum, 65, and Adrian Marcelo Podzamczer. Although the three men were working at the crossing, they were not part of Israel’s military or police forces.
In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his condolences and called it a “hard day,” condemning the attack as a “cold-blooded” murder. This incident has been characterised as a “natural response” to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The violence comes amid heightened tensions in the West Bank, where more than 600 Palestinians have been killed since the outbreak of war following Hamas’s October 7 attack.
